How To Donate

Thank you for considering a donation to Sohm Schools Support.

Please contact us to find out how to make a debit or credit card payment, or send a cheque to the charity.

We are registered for Gift Aid, so can reclaim an additional 25% of your donation from the government, if you fill in a simple form (with no hassle or obligations to you). That way, we can get more for your £££s!

He's helping...will you?

The government's Gift Aid scheme means that they will pay us £1 for every £4 you donate.

All you have to do to turn your £80 donation into £100 is to fill in a simple Gift Aid form (which we supply).

We'll do the rest.
You know it makes sense!

We are happy to receive general donations to the charity - and will let you know where the money has been spent, or you can be a bit more specific about what areas you'd like it dedicated to.

We would suggest four possible areas for donations:

  1. Sponsorship
  2. Book Fund
  3. Classroom Repair
  4. Bike Fund

Sponsorship

Their need...Sohm is a poor, rural village. Many of the adults there are illiterate, scratch farmers. They are ambitious for their children but often cannot afford to send them to school. Schooling lasts 10 years, it would be good if your commitment did too.

Your help...£5 per month will pay for books, school fees (for older pupils), uniforms and basic school dinners for a child. Match their ambition, forgo a couple of drinks, per month and make a difference.

Book Fund

Their need...The Gambian government pays most of the education costs of the younger children, but not for books for the older ones...

Your help...£50 would supply a key textbook for all pupils in a year group, in a subject of your choice.

CLASSROOM REPAIR

Their need...Many of the rooms in the Lower Basic school are in a poor state of repair, and some of them are unusable. This results in either leaky roofs - in the rainy season - or overcrowded classrooms (60 plus pupils in a class).

Your help...£100 would repair a leaky roof, or mend windows, rotted by the weather. Teachers' living accommodation is also poor, by UK standards (cramped, no electricity, sparse furniture, no running water). £100 would make a huge difference.

BIKE FUND

Their need...Many of the 500 plus pupils attending Sohm's schools walk in excess of an hour to and from school each day, in searing heat (temperature in the 90's). UK charity Jole Riders has donated 100 bikes to the school, to cut the longest journey times.

Your help...£20 would help repair and keep 5 of those bikes on the road each year, or pay for another bike. This would reduce tiredness and improve school attendance and performance.

LAPTOP DONATION

Their need...Our futures, at work and in leisure, will be dominated by computers. There are few in Sohm, and the schools don't have mains electricity. Laptops are an answer. Don't let Sohm's youngsters fall further behind.

Your help...When you upgrade your laptop or switch to a tablet - think of the students in Sohm. If your laptop is in working order, with a decent battery, we'll pick it up, and deliver it to Sohm. Simple!

Get in touch, if you can help...contact us online and we can arrange to pick up your donated laptop

Thank you again, on behalf of the students of Sohm
